Breast Cancer Prevention

Have you ever wondered why so many women and men get breast cancer?

After much research there are 3 main reasons why and how people get it.

1. At the cancer league they discovered that 100% of all breast cancer patients, none of them have iodine in their systems. The most enriched form of Iodine is seaweed. With all of the sushi sales in the old times few years more and more people are eating seaweed so that will help allot.

2. Deodorant is a major factor also. Try to only buy deodorants that have accommodate no aluminum. You are rubbing aluminum into your arm pits daily, and that metal is good for no one ever! Only get deodorants that say deodorant and if it says antiperspirant then never buy it.

Try not to cook with aluminum, confound away any Teflon pans that you own- and only use Iron pans.

3. If you get pregnant then please nurse your baby if you are able. Try to Florence Nightingale for at least 6 months. It is healthy for the baby and it will greatly reduce your risk for getting breast cancer. Studies show that longer you nurture the less likely you are to get it.

11 tips for overseas hospital treatment

October 28th, 2009

You could have sworn that sushi smelt funny.? Unfortunately that thought is two hours too late and now you’re curled up in the toilet inventing a new guttural language.?

And then a new fear strikes you.? You’re in a foreign country, alone, and you really should go to hospital. Or should you? What do you need to know? What should you look out for?

Dr Sneh Khemka, Bupa International’s Medical Director, tells you what to look out for if you need hospitalisation overseas.

Being admitted to hospital

1. Choose the best option

If you’re being admitted as an emergency or taken by ambulance, you often won’t have much choice in where you go.? However, if you can exercise choice, it’s important to select the best hospital for you – does it have the right services (eg a CT scanner), is it clean, can the staff speak your language etc?

2. Let your insurer know

Once there, you should let your insurer know you have been admitted as soon as possible so you can ensure you are covered for all treatments that you receive.? If you can let them know before you attend, they may even be able to point you to the best facility in town.

3. Ask questions

Don’t be afraid to ask questions that may seem difficult – it is important that you know what is happening to you, and instead of being offended, medical staff have a duty of care to ensure you are kept up to speed with what’s going on.

4. Provide the right information

You will be asked for your demographic details (age, sex, next of kin etc) and your medical history.? It is a good idea to carry with you a list of previous operations and treatments you may have had, along with a list of medications and allergies.

You will also be asked about how you are going to pay for treatment.? Without insurance, it can be frighteningly expensive, so you’re best to be covered and you can give them the contact details for your company who should then be able to settle your bills.

What to look out for?

5. Location is important

Hospitals do not have the same standards of care everywhere. Depending on which country you are in, and whether you are in a big city or the rural countryside, hospitals can differ greatly.? Many developed countries will have a government regulation committee that will inspect all hospitals to make sure there is a minimum standard of care.? However, in other areas it is completely unregulated.

Generally speaking, hospitals in developing countries have less

regulation and lower standards than those in developed nations.?

Sub-saharan Africa is notorious for its underfunded and understaffed

institutions and parts of South America have poor legacies for the

state of healthcare.? However, South East Asia and the Indian

subcontinent have some of the best hospitals in the world.? It’s all a

matter of choosing the right place.

6. Cleanliness is next to…

As a general rule of thumb, cleanliness is a good indicator of the level of safety in a hospital.? Word of mouth is also a good way of gauging a hospital’s reputation.? However, if you are insured with someone like Bupa International, you will more reliably be able to find out which are the good and bad places, as we have experience and check hospitals around the world for quality.

7. Consider benefits of private vs. public hospitals

Private hospitals are generally as good as public hospitals and in many places often better.? Private hospitals tend to have better

funding and can therefore afford better equipment and facilities.

However,

public hospitals may offer a range of services that private ones

cannot, including intensive care units, emergency cardiac interventions

and a wider range of staff for paramedical services such as

physiotherapy and radiology.

What role does my insurer play?

8. Returning home is not necessarily the best option

It is not always the best option to medivac you home, Bupa International runs a full medivac servicec called WMA (Worldwide Medical Assistance).? WMA get calls from all over the world, and because we know the local services and hospitals, we can often find you excellent treatment without having to fly you back home, meaning you can carry on your trip after treatment.? We may need to send you to a nearby country, but if you need urgent attention, having you in an aeroplane for an extended period is not the best idea.

In determining whether or not to medivac a patient home, we look at all the medical details of the customer, what medical services they are likely to need, and the level of cover that they have purchased.? We also take into account the personal preferences of the customer, and often will pay for a family member to travel with them should there be the need.

Then we look at where will be the best place to send them so they can get the best and quickest access to the treatment they need.

9. Understand the hospital fees and charges

There is an emerging problem amongst certain hospitals that, if incentivised in the wrong way, they are more likely to intervene with a procedure or test which may not be entirely necessary.? This is the case with not only foreign visitors, but local patients as well.

We encourage our customers to let us know in advance of any planned treatment so we can talk through the options with both the patient and the doctor, and ensure that they are acting in a medically sound manner, and not just doing things for the sake of a few extra bucks.

For hospital out-patients, you will need to pay the bill when you are discharged and make a claim from your insurer later.? For more serious problems or hospital in-patient admissions, your insurer will liase with the hospital directly about the bill.

Avoiding hospital in the first place

10. Take your own first aid kit

An emergency medical kit

always comes in handy, but what you can do with one is limited.? Kits

should ideally contain basic painkillers, antiseptic, anti-diarrhoea

and rehydration preparations, bandages and plasters.? Customs and

prescription laws restrict the amount you can carry around with you.

For

any worrying conditions, it is always best to seek expert medical

advice – things can be picked up before they develop into major

problems and sometimes you need a doctor to give you medications you

cannot otherwise access.

If you take any medications, eg

insulin, it is essential to keep an adequate supply, and to keep stores

in two separate bags in case one is lost. Also, if you are

anaphylactic, don’t forget to take adrenaline with you (and give your

travelling companion instructions on how to use it).

11.? Use your common sense

The biggest single problem that the traveller will face is dehydration (from diarrheoa and vomiting).? Access to a plentiful supply of rehydration salts and clean drinking water is paramount.

And making sure you’re adequately insured so that not only will your bills be paid, but you’ll have a ‘friend’ that can help you through particularly troublesome times.

Been to hospital whilst travelling?? Share your stories below to help others stay safe on the road.

Oooh, time to go to hospital? Here's what you need to know when you're travelling overseas

Acne Cures Remedies and Treatment Methods

October 27th, 2009

Acne affects people of every age, gender, and race. It usually strikes in plainly visible locations such as the face, neck, chest and back. Acne can be caused by a number of factors such as contact with an oily substance, use of certain medication, steroids, or the secretion of certain hormones. Over ninety percent of acne patients respond to treatment, although the treatment may need to be continued for months or even years. Here are a few natural remedies that you can use to cure acne.

What Causes Acne?

As mentioned above, acne can be caused by a number of factors. Common causes of acne include contact with an oily substance such as mineral oil, vegetable oil, or petroleum and the use of certain medication such as steroids or the contraceptive pill. However, acne is most often caused by the secretion of androgens, or sex hormones that are initially secreted at the onset of puberty. Androgens are male hormones but they are secreted by females as well. They stimulate the production of oil from the skin’s oil glands. When these oil glands become overactive and the exit from the gland is blocked, oil builds up in the gland and they begin to swell. This is how acne forms. A bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes normally colonizes this swollen gland causing the development of inflammation and pus. In particularly severe cases, the glands may burst into the skin and produce cysts. Recently health practitioners are associating acne with a fungus on the face. A clogged colon can also contribute to acne. We recommend using a colon cleanser like Oxy-Powder to keep the bowel clean.

How Can I Cure Acne?

Home Remedies:

  • A non-oily face wash that contains tea tree oil or echinacea can help to reduce the incidence of acne breakouts. Wash your face twice a day in the morning and evenings and rinse thoroughly with warm purified water.

  • Avoid oily and chemically ridden cosmetics or any facial products that contain socetyl stearate, isopropyl isostearate, isopropyl palmitate, isopropyl myristate, and sodium chloride, parabens as these ingredients can cause acne.

  • Give dry skin extra care, being sure to wash and rinse your face thoroughly and using products especially made for dry skin.

  • Natural astringent cleansers work to remove the oil buildup that may become blocked in the skin’s glands. These products may cause dryness, itching, and redness, so be sure to use them only on problem areas.

  • Oxy-Skin is also a very effective natural remedy for the elimination of acne.

Enjoy Spain’s Famous Food!

October 25th, 2009

One of the best things about visiting Spain is the amazing number of foods that are offered depending on what area of the country you travel.

Along the coast, as you’d expect, you’ll find absolutely delicious – and super-fresh – fish and seafood. Move inland and you’ll be delighted with the different meat and vegetable dishes on offer – without forgetting the incredible variety of different fruits available.

And the star of Spanish cooking is undoubtedly the tapa, the appetizer or tidbit that is offered along with your drink in a bar, or served as an entree for lunch or dinner.

In most of the small rural areas the tascas (tapas bars) are the only types of restaurants available and will feature different dishes based on what is available. In large cities there will be all different types of restaurants and more likelihood to find the more elaborate presentations and preparations of the traditional foods of the country.

A popular dish for a snack or a main course is calamari, deep fried crispy rings of squid that are served with different dipping sauces. Shrimp are either deep fried or pan fried and spiced, usually served in a peel and eat style, not shelled and prepared as is more common in North America. For those that enjoy spicy foods a sausage called a chorizo or a salami like meat called salchichon is very popular with fresh sourdough bread.

There is a lot of talk about the healthy qualities of the Mediterranean diet, and the traditional Spanish diet fits in well with this. The basic ingredient is olive oil, preferably Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The Mediterranean diet is also rich in cereals, vegetables and fruit. Spanish cooking is also very strong on fish dishes, and Spain has one of the biggest fishing fleets in the world. Strangely enough, in Madrid, which is in the geographic center of the country, over 300 kilometers from the nearest coast, you can find some of the most wonderful fish dishes you’ll ever taste.

Vegetables and fruit make up a very important part of many Spaniards’ diets. A typical entree will be a salad or a vegetable sauted with ham, and fruit is eaten by many people as a dessert. The main course could be meat or fish.

Desserts in Spain may include the traditional Christmas dish of Turron, a sweet dessert made with almonds and honey. The simple yet elegant flan with its caramelized top and rich custard bottom is an ideal dish to have with a cup of coffee after a wonderful Spanish meal.

What is Breast Cancer?

October 23rd, 2009

CANCER IS UNCHECKED GROWTH OF ABNORMAL BREAST CELLS:

* What causes cells to become abnormal and match wildly? Damage to the DNA, the brain of the cell, which causes mutations and activation of oncogenes. Usually one mutation isn’t enough; most cells must bear several mutations before they become cancerous. (Sometimes the mutations must occur in sequence to create a cancer, sometimes random order will do it.) What causes DNA devastation? Radiation, free radicals, genetic defects, electrical fields, chemicals, drugs, viruses, and metabolic stresses.

INJURY TO THE DNA INITIATES ALL CANCER:

* When mutations accumulate and oncogenes turn on, the cell is initiated. It is abnormal, but not cancerous. Initiated cells are diagnosed as atypia, dysplasia, or hyperplasia.

* Damaged cells alone extend no threat to long life. To become threatening, the abnormal cells must be promoted. Promoters bring the cells nutrients so they can imitate. (One of the strongest promoters of breast cancer is estrogen.) Although promoted cells can disguise themselves so the immune system won’t recognize them, most of them are seen and eaten, or encapsulated by the solidity so they do no harm. Promoted cells are called carcinoma in situ.

According to Christiane Northrup, M.D., in situ cancer cells are ordinarily found in the breasts of women who die of causes other than cancer. And according to Susan Love, M.D., breast cancer specialist, in situ cells are reversible without invasive treatments and shouldn’t be cogitation of as cancers.

THE CANCER CASCADE: INITIATION, PROMOTION, GROWTH:

* Promoted breast cells, no issue how many of them there are, are not classified as invasive unless they spread out of the tissues of origin and into the surrounding tissues. This is the growth phase. When promoted cells tender the growth phase, they begin to form a tumor and to recruit blood vessels to help supply their giant need for nutrients. (The tumor may grow so quickly that cells in its center die from lack of nourishment.) The diagnosis now becomes infiltrating or invasive carcinoma.

THE CANCER CASCADE CAN BE HALTED OR REVERSED:

* Once a rally of abnormal, quickly-replicating cells has created a network of blood vessels, individual cancer cells can classify from the tumor and travel to other parts of the body. Because the breast is not vital to life, a breast cancer that stays in the heart is not life-threatening. But if breast cancer cells get to the liver, lungs, bone marrow, or the brain and at to grow, they can hinder the functioning of processes necessary for life. The body attempts to check this spread by locking titty cancer cells in lymph node prisons and by sending immune system cells out to eat traveling cancer cells. If cancer cells are found in the axillary lymph nodes, the diagnosis is pushy or metastasized carcinoma.

NINETY PERCENT OF CANCER DEATHS ARE FROM METASTASES:

* Not everyone whose cellular DNA is damaged will get cancer. Why not? All cells have the character to repair themselves or to shut down if they are mutated or damaged. Good lifestyle habits and ordinary foods such as lentils also back DNA damage.

SPECIAL IMMUNE CELLS EAT POTENTIAL CANCERS:

* The wear-and-tear of duration gives rise to so many mutated, abnormal, initiated cells (even in a healthy person) that the immune system forms a never-ending stream of specialized cells to seek out and consume them. So long as the immune system is strong, and well supplied with nutrients, initiated and promoted cells can be harmlessly eliminated, checking the potential of cancer.

CANCER CELLS ARE IMMATURE YET REPRODUCE WITHOUT LIMITS. LIVING LONG PAST THEIR SPAN, THEY APPEAR IMMORTAL:

* Building powerful immunity isn’t always enough, though. Cancer cells can trick the protected system into leaving them alone, and they can replicate so rapidly that they overwhelm the immune system with sheer force of numbers. One of the reasons breast cancer is so sensitive to treat is that cancer cells are full of life. They no longer have the inner signal that tells them to die after reproducing. Like the medicine man’s apprentice, the woman with breast cancer finds herself with cancer cells that replicate unceasingly. Cancer cells never fructify up and become productive members of their community. They simply take up space.

BREAST CANCER IS NOT ONE DISEASE, BUT MANY:

* Because there are assorted types of cells in the breasts (e.g., ducts and lobes) and a variety of ways that a cell can be abnormal, there are many kinds of knocker cancers and many possible treatments. Of the two dozen kinds of breast cancer known, the majority originate in the duct cells. (See depiction of duct cells, page 106 in my book, Breast Cancer? Breast Health!)

* Some boob cancers grow slowly, others quickly. Slow growing breast cancers double in size every 42-100 days or more. Quick-witted growing breast cancers can double every 21 days. Pre- and peri-menopausal women tend to have faster growing, more bellicose breast cancers (about 10-15 percent of all breast cancers).

* Post-menopausal women, who account for 60-80 percent of all core cancer cases, usually have slow-growing cancers, which rarely metastasize.

Microscopic grilling of cellular tissue is the only scientifically accepted way to diagnose cancer.

* The first breast surgery most women will have is a biopsy. When there is a disbelieving finding on a mammogram or a palpable lump, there is no way to rule out cancer unless a piece of breast tissue is removed and examined under a microscope by a pathologist. If there is a diagnosis of cancer and further surgery is done, the bosom tissues removed are also sent to the pathologist.

* The pathologist can see cancerous cells if they are present and can determine the fount and state of the cancer by a variety of signs. These findings are collected into a pathology report which will, to a great degree, decide the treatment options that you will be offered. Pathology reports are based on opinion as well as fact, so many women have two, three, or even four different pathologists look at their web samples and give an opinion.

* To judge the “stage” of a cancer (see page 137, Breast Cancer? Chest Health!), lymph glands are removed (excised) from the nearby armpit. Lymph gland excision always cuts some of the nerves to the arm. Displacement of the lymph glands does nothing to treat or cure breast cancer, and may hinder the body’s ability to behave with cancer. Lymph gland removal can cause numbness as well as pain, impaired circulation, swelling (sometimes savage and long-lasting), and a life-long risk of severe infection. The more lymph nodes removed, the more cruel these side effects.

* Lack of cancer cells in the lymph nodes doesn’t guarantee that the cancer hasn’t metastasized (one-third of all women with argumentative nodes nonetheless have metastasizing cancer), but a positive finding does indicate that the cancer has metastasized and may be growing elsewhere in the corps.

Japanese Encephalitis: New Vaccine and Advice

October 21st, 2009

For travelers headed to Asia, avoidance of Japanese Encephalitis should be a priority as high as finding a decent noodle bar.

WorldNomads.com’s roving medical expert Dr. Erik McLaughlin MD tells us about new developments in a vaccine and once again reminds us to avoid mozzies!

What is Japanese Encephalitis?

A traveler does not need to have a degree in infectious diseases to know that Japanese Encephalitis is found in Asia.? This is because, unlike so many of the other viral illnesses, the name is quite simple when broken down.? Encephalitis features the Greek root word “encephalo” meaning brain and “itis” meaning inflammation or infection.? So we have an inflammation/infection of the brain that is found in Japan and Asia.

Where is it found?

Japanese Encephalitis is found in a large area, covering much of Asia and specifically South East Asia – see the map below.? This is considered primarily a disease of rural environments and those traveling to farming areas are considered at special risk.?

The time of year is a special concern, as well.? Although the disease is active year-round, rainy seasons increase mosquito populations, generally causing an increase in the number of cases.

JE is very important to travelers because approximately 30,000-50,000

cases are diagnosed each year, in the regions it is found.? Of these

cases, the majority are asymptomatic but of those infections with

symptoms, up to 30% are fatal.? Also, most experts agree that the

number of reported cases is much less than actual cases.

How do I get it and what does it cause?

This viral illness is a frequent problem for travelers, not necessarily because of the infection itself but because the vaccine against it is quite controversial.?

JE is spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes making it very difficult to prevent -? and treatment once acquired, is only supportive.? This means that once you actually get the illness, there is not a lot that can be done about it, other than keeping the victim comfortable with adequate hydration, fever reduction and pain control. Symptoms of JE typically include high fevers, headaches, disorientation and sometimes seizures.

How do I prevent it?

Preventing infection with JE still centers on avoiding mosquito bites.? Bite prevention is best accomplished with a two-fold approach including barrier methods such as bed nets, long sleeves and long pants.? Second, using chemical insect repellents such as DEET body spray and permethrin treated clothing are strongly advised.? Avoidance of outdoor activity during peak mosquito biting times (dusk/dawn) should also be attempted.

Vaccines against JE

Recently, a new vaccine against Japanese Encephalitis has become approved in the USA named Ixiaro.? This vaccine is currently awaiting approval in the EU.? This is a major step forward in protecting travelers because the previous vaccine was often difficult to obtain and had many side effects.?

The old vaccine was made with mouse-brain tissue and carried a lot of risk with it, prompting travel docs to be hesitant when advising those to use it.? The old JE vaccine was especially known to cause severe allergic reactions.? Previously, the vaccine was advised for those traveling to rural areas and planning extended travels, for a month or more.? Also, those planning camping and outdoor sleeping were considered good candidates for the vaccine.

However, all things change and with the development of a new and safer vaccine against JE, so have the recommendations to travelers in these areas.? A recent article in the Journal of Travel Medicine looks at this new vaccine and analyzes the recommendations from an “expert group” looking at travel vaccines.? From their meeting, the following advice was generated about who should be receiving the new and safer JE vaccine.

Who should receive the new JE vaccine?

  • All expatriates
  • Repeat travelers who frequent the area and have prolonged stays
  • Any person traveling to rural areas
  • Travelers wishing maximum protection

Persons who should consider the new JE vaccine include:

  • Those with increased outdoor exposure
  • Persons over 50 years of age
  • Children less than 10 years of age
  • Those with chronic medical conditions

What does this all mean for travelers?

Previously, the risk of severe reaction to a JE vaccine caused many travelers to avoid this protective measure.? Currently, a new and safer vaccine appears to be free of these previous side-effects.? This means travelers have a better weapon against preventing this potentially fatal illness.? Hopefully, this will prompt travelers headed to Asia to discuss this new vaccine with their travel doctors and have more peace of mind with a safer vaccine.
